Interactions bipartite network of scale insects-substrates (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) in a crop system of coffee, guajava and avocado

Abstract



The scale insects (Coccomorpha) constitute pests of crops and also of a great diversity of plants worldwide. This group of insects contains nearly 8000 species in 32 families. Among all of these families, the members of Coccidae, Pseudococcidae y Diaspididae cause most of the crops losses. It is known for Cuba 183 species of scale insects belonging to 11 families. In this study is built the interaction bipartite network of a Coccomorpha assemblage in 60 substrates in a system crop of coffee (Coffea arabica), along to guajava (Psidium guajava) and avocado (Persea americana). There were observed a total of 13 species belonging to the three mentioned families. The interactions network structure was nested and robust, with tendency to specialization and the presence of four insect-substrate modules. Coffea plants resulted the most relevant crop for the scale insects. Of all of the individuals detected in the crop system, 93% were present on the coffee. All of the most used substrates (with more than one thousand individuals observed on them) belonged to this plant. In addition, the coffee crop was component of three of the four modules detected in the system.
