First report of Cherax quadricarinatus (Decapoda: Parastacidae) inside caves in Cuba

Abstract
The Australian redclaw crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus (von Martens, 1868), was introduced to Cuba for aquaculture. It is known of the invasive ability of this crustacean and its capacity to survive and adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions in freshwater ecosystems. In Cuba, the first wild populations were found in the province of Holguin in the eastern region. This note reports the presence of C. quadricarinatus inside a cave in the province of Pinar del Río, in western Cuba. Although the negative impact of this invasive species is still unknown in Cuba, urgent control programs are suggested, especially in hypogeous environments where the cave biota could be particularly sensitive to its impacts.
