Diet of Eleutherodactylus atkinsi (Anura: Eleutherodactylidae) in western Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
The studies of diet are the baseline for the conservation and ecology study in amphibians. In Cuba, there is little knowledge about the trophic ecology of this group, most available data are based in anecdotic isolated records. Here is the first approach to the diet of Eleutherodactylus atkinsi. Three forested areas from western Cuba (Pinar del Río and Artemisa provinces) were visited. This frog eat mostly hymenopterans (formicides) and isopods. The snout-urostile length was not related to the prey size, nor to the number of preys per stomach. Inorganic materials were also detected in individuals from two localities (Viñales and Guanahacabibes). Clear-cut and garbage deposits are the most important threats to this species in the studied areas.
