Aquatic macroinvertebrates in four aquatories in Pinar del Río

Abstract



The inventory of the freshwater macroinvertebrates was made in four lentic water aquariums, within farms under Sustainable Land Management in the Southern Plain of Pinar del Río. For the collection of macroinvertebrates, a D net with a 0.5mm mesh size was used; examining a surface of 8m. Identification was made down to the lowest possible level, though mainly at the family level. A total of 160 individuals grouped into three phylums, five classes, 11 orders and 24 families were captured. At lower levels, 12 genera and eight species could be identified. Within the Insecta class, the orders with the largest number of families were Hemiptera (7) and Coleoptera (6). Another of the best represented classes was Gastropoda with three orders and 4 families. Of the aquariums studied, the Roberto Amarán micro-dam stood out with the highest number of registered families (12). This taxonomic list of freshwater macroinvertebrates is the first statement for artificial aquatic ecosystems in the Southern Plain of Pinar del Río.
