Return of a breeding colony of Caribbean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) to Boca Grande, Nuevitas, Cuba

Abstract
One of nesting sites of Caribbean Flamingo on Cuba is the wetland Boca Grande, located in the Wild life Refuge Cayos Ballenatos y Manglares de la Bahía de Nuevitas. However, this breeding colony disappeared to the end 1990 decade due to human pressures. The aim of this note is to document the rediscover in 2017 of one breeding colony of flamingos on Boca Gran de. The colony size was estimated through direct counts of nests; in 2017 were observed 238 empty nests, but one year later, 636 nests were found, most actives. The return of the flamingoes to this area, reinforces the high values of Boca Grande as an important site for conservation of this species in Cuba.
