Abstract

Polymita brocheri is a threatened Cuban endemic tree snail species. Although the understanding of its life cycle is vital for conservation plans, there is scant information about its life history and reproductive biology. Therefore, the aim of the present work is to shed light on the fertility coefficient, hatching rate, incubation length, life table parameters and curves of survivorship and growth of this species. We studied this under captive conditions between 2016 and 2019. Ten individuals were collected in Maisí, Guantánamo, and kept in pairs, in plastic containers to check mating, oviposition and hatching. Of the hatchlings, 60 individuals were followed from hatching to death, recording survivals and growth of the shell’s major diameter. The resulting survivorship and growth curves, and life table parameters are reported here. On average, the fertility coefficient was 89 eggs per laying, hatching rate was 69 % of total eggs laid and incubation lasted 9 days. The survivorship curve and life table indicated high mortality rate of hatchings and juveniles (Type III survivorship curve), low life expectancy and low net reproductive rate. Growth curve indicated that snails reached their adult size between 15 and 24 months after hatching and sexual maturity was reached after 20 months on average.
